I just wanted to point out a key benefit for this class. I am currently posting this blog from London as I am on a business trip. I find this fascinating that we can communicate with no limitations. The only down side is that it is 1:30pm  in Ohio (Tuesday April 29th) and the time here is 6:30pm. Read blog below:

The two high definition videos using the Microsoft website for some reason will not open up on my computer. I have a feeling that maybe the resolution on my computer cannot support the program. This is somewhat discouraging and one down side of this program. I had no problems with the apple program. See description below.

You will find the link for my favorite hi def video on Apple website below. I chose this particular website because I happen to thing that Ducati is the best make motorcycle make today. Take a minute to browse this link: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/ducati.html

I chose to use www.vimeo.com to upload my video which I created using a small digital camera. This program was easy to use and seemed to work well however it took a very long time to upload and convert, around 2.5 hours. The process was simple. I used the camera in video mode and recorded a 2 minute shoot. The upload was as simple as clicking a browser tab and letting the program to the rest. When the upload was complete, I received an email informing me that upload was complete. Take a minute (or two) to view my video using the link below:

http://vimeo.com/938618

I have created an account on www.wiziq.com. Use this link and join the website. After you complete that, invite me to be a part of your contact list.

Join me on www.seesmic.com. You can find me under the user name ddmartinpe. I have recorded a profile with audio only. It seems that I’m having a bit of an issue with my video device and cannot get it working yet. Audio is working well.

Activity #1

This panorama of Moraine Lake rockpile near outlet nr2 is my favorite view. I think it’s one of the most beautiful places in Canada, take a look: http://www.virtualparks.org/scenes/ZVHFzVq3kaMVau1KsGV9SEQ.html

Activity #2

Take a few minutes to view my presentation on Social Bookmarking that I have downloaded to Slideshare:

http://www.slideshare.net/ddmartinpe/social-bookmarking-by-dan-martin-363921/

Activity #3

I did not have access to a working microphone therefore I chose to use a Text-to-Speech website called www.spokentext.net.  Inputting this audio into the power point presentation was not as easy as it seems. I tried several different archiving programs before I got slideshare to accept the formatting. The audio is not the best quality but I think you can make out the words just fine.

Unit Learning #9:

Google Calendars: This would be my first choice for using project management software. The program is very user friendly and intuitive. The nice thing is that you can attact this calendar to your home page to reference as you work and check emails. As far as I know, we cannot conduct a live meeting or have real time interaction.

MyOffice on Facebook: I enjoy using Facebook in general therefore the more I can learning about this program the better. Facebook has so much to offer. I think as a group we should MyOffice. As far as I know, we cannot conduct a live meeting or have real time interaction.

ZOHO Project: I thought this program was pretty neat. It seems to be a good collaboration tool when working as a group. This program has a number of accessible features such as number processing, tasks and milestones, calendars, meeting schedules, forums, reports just to name a few. I would imagine I could put this program to good use. http://ddmartinpe.projects.zoho.com/login.do

Yugma: This program seem to be a little more involved and will probably take some more time to get used to. From the little that I’ve learned so far, this is a good program to conduct live meeting or real time interaction. Also, for some reason this program does not agree with the security settings on my work labtop and I’m not really sure why yet.

Unit Learning #8

1.      Facebook: This would be my first choice in using social networking sites. I can add friends and interact with them to see what is going on or new in their lives. Facebook offers many applications and is easy to use. I can send messages to friends or groups of friends. This program is very user friendly and intuitive. The thing I like the most about Facebook is that I can have multiple groups of interaction including my friends, work colleagues and distant family memebers.

2.      Ning: This site is also of great method of interaction between friends, work colleagues, and distant family members however it is not as popular therefore not my first choice in social networks. It is however for the most part very easy to use. Using Ning works great if everyone is on the same program for example YSU groups. I like the fact that your can create my own unique main page. I am surprised, especially being free, that Ning is not more popular.

3.      Pownce: This is another networking site similar to Facebook and Ning. I noticed that Pownce is nowhere near as popular as other social networking sites especially in the US. I could not find as many members that relate to me however another great way to stay connected. This program has many of the same features plus maybe a few additional ones.

4.      Linkedin: This is a great way to get linked into several different organizations, businesses or colleges. After joining Linkin, I was surprised to find my own company already linked to this network as well as many others. This program has a nice feature which allows me to receive updates from several different organizations which is helpful in staying connected to what is going on in today’s industry. I was amazed after joining Linkedin to find many of my friends and old colleagues already members and a easy way to keep in touch.

5.      Friendfeed: This site is still pretty new to me and I in the process of familiarizing myself with all it’s features. This program seems to be relatively popular however just not with my group of friends.

Blogs

March 18, 2008

Blogs have rapidly become very popular tools used by internet users. These tools are relatively new and only recently developed in the past 4 years. They are used to log on to websites and displayed in a notepad format. Blogs have urbanized into a very fast and simply method of visiting website and posting discussions. The word “blog” came from the term “web log,” and it is basically a website with large storage capacity.

I use Twitter primarily for class/group discussions, it allows the group and alternative way of keeping in touch. I think it’s a great method of communication. I am starting to turn my friends on to the program. I feel it is very intuitive and user friendly.

I find learning about Social Network Services somewhat interesting. I never realized how many different networks are out there. I’ve joined so many new sites lately that I’m having trouble keeping track of them all. I’ve been using the internet for many years now but I can honestly say that I never really understood the relationship between URL’s, WWW, and http and everything else that come with accessing information on the internet. Google seems to continuously amazing me as to the capabilities. It really is amazing. With access to all these tools, it would be nice to one day work from the comfort of my own home, a virtual office. At this point, there is nothing I cannot do from home.
